"World's Best" deserves to be restricted to those who grow and bloom attractively without added expense and toxicity of added chemicals, or at least as little as possible. I already grow many roses which don't require chemical intervention in my micro climate and I confess my appreciation and enjoyment of those specific ones is much greater than the few remaining ones which don't do their best because they can't resist issues where I grow them. ![]() I have never been one to break out the Ortho (or any other brand) to alleviate a fungal or insect break out and I find myself increasingly reactive to even the newer, more environmentally friendly chemicals. Even the supposedly "less toxic" ones have effects on people and the environment. Some of Europe, Germany in particular, has already banned chemical use on ornamentals. Given the choice of two plants, both with acceptably attractive blooms, but one possessing greater disease resistance, therefore requiring fewer chemicals applied less frequently, I will choose (and HAVE chosen)the latter. While I appreciate a beautiful flower (pretty face), a plant highly susceptible to disease does not fit my description of being a "world's best rose". Rosetom, it appears our definition of "the world's best roses" differs quite a bit. Those are all at least somewhat disease-resistant also-though no hybrid tea seems to be strongly disease resistant.ĭo you know about ? Wonderful source for finding out more about just about any rose-but you do have to know the name of it in order to look up roses. ![]() In the hybrid tea category, in addition to Double Delight mentioned above, some good ones are Elle (peachy pink with touch of yellow at base), Valencia (buff-yellow-apricot blend), Chrysler Imperial (red), Peter Mayle (hot pink), Elina (creamy-white with touch of yellow in center-one of my favorites though maybe not quite as odiferous as the others listed). Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think there is such a thing as the "perfect rose bush." However, if large flowers and strong fragrance are your main requirements (and I'm taking "like cut flowers" to mean looking like a bouquet of roses you order from the florists for Mother's Day), then you want one of the hybrid teas, and there are many that would fulfill your needs.
